Vilnius nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

Vilnius nightlife sits in three walkable clusters: the Old Town lanes between Pilies and Vilniaus streets, the artists' quarter of Užupis just across the river, and the streets around the bus and train station, where the bigger clubs are. Everything below is within about 25 minutes on foot of Cathedral Square, so you can move between areas without a taxi.

Prices are 2026 estimates for the centre. Expect to pay less in student bars and more in cocktail rooms. Opening hours shift by season and by night, so treat the times as a guide and check before a long walk.

Use Cathedral Square as your anchor. The Old Town bar strip runs north-east along Pilies street; Užupis is a short walk east across the river; the station district is south, past the Gates of Dawn. All three are flat and lit, and the walk between the Old Town and Užupis takes about 10 minutes.

Lithuania's drinking age is 20, and ID is checked at the door and sometimes at the bar; carry your passport or a photo ID. Shop sales of alcohol stop at 20:00 and at 15:00 on Sundays, so buy earlier if you plan to drink at your accommodation. Tipping is about 10% for good table service; round up elsewhere.

Vilnius is generally a safe city at night, but the usual rules apply: stay in lit streets, keep your group together, watch your drink, and avoid unlicensed taxis. Use app-based taxis or a licensed rank, and agree the fare or check the meter. In winter, pavements ice over and nights are long and cold, so dress for the walk between bars.

If you are out late, note that some clubs have a dress code and a door charge; check the night's listing before you go. For a calmer evening, book a table at a cocktail room or a live-music venue rather than arriving at a club at peak time.

The best time for Vilnius nightlife is late spring to early autumn, roughly May to September, when terraces and courtyards open and the walk between areas is pleasant. Summer also brings long daylight and outdoor events. December is lively with Christmas markets and parties, but the cold shortens the evening.

Thursday to Saturday are the busiest nights. Sunday to Wednesday are much quieter, with some bars closing early or not opening at all. If you want a full choice of venues, aim for a Friday or Saturday; if you want a calmer drink, a midweek evening in the Old Town works well.
