Vienna in April: what to expect

April in Vienna is a transition month: the continental winter pattern breaks down and the city warms quickly, but cold snaps still arrive from the north and the wind through the Danube basin can feel raw. Expect mild afternoons and cool mornings, with the first genuinely warm days in the last third of the month.

Rain comes as showers rather than all-day drizzle, so a single wet morning rarely ruins a day. Snow in the city is possible early in the month but rare. The figures below are 2026 estimates based on long-term normals for Vienna; treat them as planning ranges, not forecasts.

April sits in the gap between the Easter holidays and the May long weekends, which makes it one of the quietest and cheapest months to stay in the centre. Hotel rates in the first and second week are often the lowest of the spring, and you can usually book a central room at short notice.

The exception is Easter week, when European school holidays fill the museums, the Easter markets and the trains from Germany. Book that week early. Otherwise, expect short queues at the big sights and space on the Ring trams.

Easter falls on 29 March 2027, so in most years the Easter weekend and its markets land in late March or early April. Vienna's Easter markets run for a few weeks around the holiday, with the main ones on Freyung and in front of Schönbrunn; they close shortly after Easter Monday.

The other fixed point is 1 May, which is just outside the month but pulls the May Day parades and the start of the Vienna Festival season into the first days of May. In between, the city's concert and opera calendar runs at full strength, and the Prater's rides and the Danube Island paths open up as the weather allows. Confirm dates locally, as Easter shifts each year.

April suits the city itself. The Ringstrasse, the museums and the palaces are all comfortable to walk in mild weather, and the gardens at Schönbrunn and the Belvedere start to green up in the second half of the month. The vineyards on the edge of the city, at Nussdorf and Grinzing, are pleasant for a walk even before the new wine season.

Day trips by train work well: Krems and the Wachau are about an hour away, and the apricot and vine blossom in the Wachau often peaks in mid-April. Mountain destinations are the weak point. Many lifts and huts in the Alps close after Easter and do not reopen until June, so treat Innsbruck, Salzburg's lakes and the high valleys as a city-and-valley trip rather than a hiking one.

Pack for two seasons in one week: a light jacket or rain shell, a warm mid-layer for cool mornings and evenings, and shoes that handle wet cobbles. An umbrella is worth carrying, since showers are short but frequent. Sunglasses and a hat help on the bright, clear days that follow a cold front.

If you plan to visit churches, the opera or a formal concert, bring one smarter outfit. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else in Vienna, where the sights are spread out and much of the day is spent on your feet.

March is colder and greyer, with the Easter markets at the end of the month. May is warmer and greener but busier and more expensive, with the May Day parades and the start of the festival season. June brings the best all-round weather and the reopening of the Alpine lifts and huts.
