Vienna and Lower Austria
Sleep in Vienna; do the Wachau and Melk as a day trip and Bratislava as a half day, all by train from one kept bed.
Rules in force · 3
- Austria ↗Austria is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Austria ↗Motorways and expressways need a vignette (digital or sticker); driving on them without one brings on-the-spot fines.
- Austria ↗Winter tyres or chains are required in winter conditions; hire cars from outside Austria may not have them fitted.
The east of Austria is one base and a handful of excursions. Vienna has the palaces, museums and coffeehouses; the Wachau valley and Semmering railway are day trips by train or boat. Changing hotels every night wastes mornings — keep the Vienna bed and travel light.
