Vienna works as a walk-and-tram city: put the Ringstrasse sights in the morning, a coffeehouse in the afternoon, and book Schönbrunn for opening — the queues, not the distances, are the risk.

The honest verdict

Vienna's centre is compact and flat, and the U-Bahn, trams and S-Bahn reach everything else. The trips that go wrong are the ones that try to see the Hofburg, Schönbrunn and a museum in one day, or arrive on a Sunday or public holiday when shops are shut and the big museums have short queues but short hours. Four clusters cover a first visit; the Wachau and Bratislava are trips away from one kept bed.
