What Hietzing is like
Hietzing is Vienna's 13th district, on the western edge of the city along the Wien River. It grew from a village into a district because Schönbrunn Palace was built beside it, and the streets around the palace still hold old villas and gardens rather than apartment blocks.
Roughly three-quarters of the district is green space, most of it the Lainzer Tiergarten, a wooded former Habsburg hunting area that is now a nature reserve with walking trails. The Austrian public broadcaster ORF has its headquarters on the Küniglberg, but otherwise Hietzing is residential and low-rise.
The district is quiet in the evening. That is the trade: you get gardens, the palace park and the zoo, and you give up the density of cafés, bars and restaurants you find closer to the centre.

Yes, if Schönbrunn is a priority and you would rather walk to it than ride across town. Families do well here: the zoo, the park and the palace are all close, and the streets are calm. It also suits travellers who have seen central Vienna before and want a slower base.

The U4 ride is short, but you will make it twice a day, and you should check the last connections on the Wiener Linien timetable before booking a late dinner in town. Central districts such as Innere Stadt, Neubau or Wieden put dinner and the museums on foot.
A middle option: stay in Hietzing for two or three nights around a Schönbrunn day, then move inward for the rest of the trip. Changing hotels once in Vienna is cheap and quick by U-Bahn.

Around Schönbrunn and the Hietzing U4 station you will find the densest cluster of places, including cafés for a mid-morning break between the palace and the zoo. The area near Hietzing station is the practical choice for dinner; elsewhere in the district, opening hours vary, so check before you set out (check).
For a wider choice, ride the U4 two or three stops toward the centre, or plan dinner in the Innere Stadt or Neubau after a day of sightseeing. If you are arriving late, eat before you come back to Hietzing.
Getting around and getting in
