Vernazza is the fourth of the five Cinque Terre villages and the only one with a proper harbour. It is small: about 1,000 residents, one cobbled main street, a castle above the water and a church on the rocks. The train station sits roughly a 10-minute walk above the harbour, and cars cannot enter the village. Two nights is the useful stay: one full day for the village and one hike, plus a buffer for rain or a closed trail.

Getting around

On foot only inside the village; the main street from the station to the harbour takes about 10 minutes. The Cinque Terre train line links all five villages and runs frequently; buy a Cinque Terre Card for unlimited train rides and trail access. Boats call at Vernazza harbour in season when the sea allows. A small car park sits about 400 m north of the village, and driving into the centre is not possible.

Watch out

Safety

Vernazza is a safe, tiny village; the real risks are the sea (no lifeguards, slippery breakwater rocks), steep wet steps, and pickpockets on crowded summer trains. Keep nothing loose in your pockets on the Cinque Terre line.
  • Trail sections close for landslides or bad weather: check the Cinque Terre park site the morning you plan to hike.
  • Summer trains and the main street are packed between about 10:00 and 17:00; the village is calm before 09:00 and after 19:00.
  • Steps and uneven cobbles everywhere: pack light, and expect no lifts in guest houses.
  • Autumn rain can be heavy; the village flooded badly in 2011 and drains are still a local concern in storms.
  • Restaurant and room prices peak in Jul–Aug; book beds weeks ahead in high season.
