Weather in April
April is Vancouver's transition month: the wet season is loosening but not finished. Daytime highs sit near 13 °C and nights near 5 °C, so a light jacket works by day and a warmer layer is welcome after dark. Sea-level snow is rare; the snow line stays up in the North Shore mountains and at Whistler.
Expect rain on roughly half the days, often as passing showers rather than all-day downpours, with brighter spells in between. Daylight stretches from about 13 hours at the start of the month to 14.5 by the end, which leaves long evenings for the seawall and the blossom streets. Wind off the water makes the waterfront feel cooler than the number suggests.
| Measure | April | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime high | About 13 °C | Cooler on the waterfront and in shade |
| Night low | About 5 °C | Rarely near freezing at sea level |
| Rain days | Roughly half the month | Showers, often short |
| Sun hours | About 5–6 per day | Bright gaps between systems |
| Daylight | 13–14.5 hours | Long evenings by late April |
| Snow at sea level | Rare | Still deep at altitude |

Crowds and prices
April is one of the quietest and cheapest months to be in Vancouver. The cruise season has not started, school holidays are over, and the summer convention calendar is still weeks away, so hotel rates sit near their yearly low and you can often book a good downtown room at short notice.
The exceptions are short: the Easter long weekend and the morning of the Vancouver Sun Run bring a brief spike in domestic demand and some downtown street closures. Book those dates early if they matter, and otherwise treat April as a walk-in month for restaurants, tours and ferries.
| Index | April score (1–5) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Crowds | 2 | Quiet; no cruise ships, short queues |
| Prices | 2 | Hotels near their yearly low |
| Weather | 3 | Mild but wet; about half the days see rain |
What's on in April
The signature event is the cherry blossom season: thousands of trees across the city bloom from late March into mid-April, and locals treat it as a genuine festival. The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival runs through the season with walks, picnics and neighbourhood maps (check exact dates each year).
Easter usually falls in late March or April and brings a long weekend, family events and higher domestic demand for a few days. The Vancouver Sun Run, a large 10 km road race, is typically held in April and closes some downtown streets on race morning (check the date). Ski season at Whistler and the North Shore mountains is still running, often into May.

Where to go in April
April rewards low expectations and flexible plans. Stay in the city on wet days: Stanley Park's seawall, Granville Island Public Market and the Museum of Anthropology all work in the rain, and the cherry blossom streets of the West End and Queen Elizabeth Park are at their best in a break between showers.
Save the mountains and the water for the clearer days. Grouse Mountain and the Sea to Sky gondola run through spring, and Whistler is still skiing; the Gulf Islands and Bowen Island are day-trip options when the forecast holds. Check trail and road conditions before heading out — alpine trails in the North Shore mountains are often still snowbound in April.
- Stanley Park seawall — walkable in light rain, sheltered sections
- Granville Island Public Market — indoor, good wet-day stop
- Queen Elizabeth Park and the West End — cherry blossom viewing
- Grouse Mountain and Sea to Sky gondola — check conditions
- Whistler — late-season skiing, often into May
- Bowen Island and the Gulf Islands — day trips on clear days
What to pack
Pack for wet and mild, not cold: a waterproof shell with a hood, shoes that handle puddles, and layers you can shed when the sun comes out. An umbrella is useful in the city but less so on exposed trails.
Bring sunglasses and sunscreen anyway — bright spells between showers are strong — and a small daypack with a dry bag for electronics. If you plan to ski or hike above the city, add warm layers, gloves and waterproof trousers; conditions at altitude are closer to winter than to the mild coast.
- Waterproof jacket with hood
- Water-resistant shoes or boots
- Layers for 5–13 °C swings
- Compact umbrella
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Dry bag or waterproof phone case
- Warm layers, gloves and waterproof trousers for mountain days
Nearby months
March is cooler and similarly wet, with ski season in full swing and fewer blossoms. May is the step change: rain eases, days stretch past 15 hours and the city starts to feel like summer, at medium prices and medium crowds.
June is drier and busier still, with the best balance of weather and space before July's peak. If April's showers are the deciding factor, May and June are the upgrade; if you want the cheapest beds and the blossoms, April wins.
