Start in the Old Town area around Main Street, where the town's early buildings and small museum spaces sit within a few blocks. Walk the paseo network from there: the paved paths thread behind streets and under roads, and they are the one thing here you cannot see from a car.
Midday, drive south to the Six Flags Magic Mountain area if rides are the point, or head to the Santa Clara River trail for a flat walk or bike ride. Finish with an early dinner; kitchens in the valley tend to close earlier than in Los Angeles.
If you have only a few hours, do the Old Town walk and one paseo loop, then leave. There is not enough here to fill a full day on foot alone.
