Best time to visit Valencia: weather, crowds and events by month

Valencia is inland Bukidnon, on the plateau above Cagayan de Oro. That height takes the edge off the heat you feel on the coast, but it also means afternoon showers are common even in the dry season. The parent Philippines guide puts the north Mindanao zone at its best from March to May, workable in January and February, and wet from June through to December.

Think of the year in three blocks. March to May is the window most travellers should aim for: drier roads, clearer views over the Bukidnon highlands, and enough dry spells for the short trips out to waterfalls and viewpoints. November to February is the wetter half of the local year, with rain arriving in bursts rather than all day; it is still a reasonable time if you have warm layers and a flexible plan. June to October is the heaviest stretch, when rain can settle in for days and road conditions on rural routes get less predictable.

Valencia is not a beach resort town, so it never fills the way Boracay or El Nido do. The pressure comes from national travel patterns instead. Holy Week, which moves between March and April, is the single busiest domestic travel period in the Philippines: offices and many shops close from Maundy Thursday to Easter, and flights, buses and rooms sell out. Christmas to New Year is the other peak, with heavy traffic and higher room rates from mid-December.

Outside those dates, expect medium crowds in the dry months and low crowds in the wet ones. Rates follow the same shape: high in December, January and around Holy Week, medium in February, March, May and November, and lowest from June to October. If your dates are fixed by a festival or a family visit, book transport first — seats on the Cagayan de Oro road and flights into Laguindingan are the parts that run out.

Bukidnon sits high enough that mornings and evenings can feel cool by Philippine standards, especially from December to February. Days are warm year-round. Rain is the variable: in the wet months it can arrive mid-afternoon and last hours, and upland roads can be slippery or briefly impassable.

Pack a light rain shell you can carry every day, quick-drying shoes for waterfall and trail visits, and one warmer layer for early starts. A dry bag or plastic sleeve for your phone is worth the space from June to December. If you are travelling in the wet season, build one indoor or town-based day into every three, and keep a buffer day before any onward flight.

National holidays matter more here than local festivals. Holy Week closes offices and many shops and pushes domestic travel to its yearly peak. All Saints and All Souls on 1–2 November sends families to cemeteries and fills buses and ferries for several days around the date. The Christmas season runs from September in decoration terms, with traffic and prices peaking in the last two weeks of December.

Mindanao also observes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which move each year and are widely marked on the island. Local Valencia and Bukidnon town events vary by year, so confirm dates with your accommodation before you build a trip around one.

Valencia is cheaper than the resort islands. Expect mid-range guesthouses and hotels to sit well below Cebu or Boracay rates, with the biggest jumps around Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. Meals at local eateries and market food are inexpensive; transport around town by tricycle or habal-habal is short-money per ride.

The larger costs are the ones that get you here: a flight into Cagayan de Oro's Laguindingan airport, then roughly two hours by road up to Valencia, by bus, van or private transfer. Treat all figures as 2026 estimates and confirm current rates when you book.

Book the Cagayan de Oro to Valencia leg before you book anything else in peak periods, because that is the part that sells out. In the wet months, travel in the morning where you can: afternoon rain is the usual pattern, and upland roads are easier before it starts.

Keep cash for small towns and rural stops, since card acceptance is limited outside the main commercial areas. Download offline maps before you leave the city, and check the forecast the day before any waterfall or trail trip, as heavy rain can close routes with little notice.
