Utena is a small industrial town of about 25,600 people in northeast Lithuania, first recorded in 1261 and rebuilt in stone after fires in the 1890s. Its own sights take half a day; the reason to stop is the surrounding forest and lake country, including Aukštaitija National Park. Buses from Vilnius run hourly or two-hourly and take about 1 h 40 min.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: museum, main square, churches and the lake are within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses criss-cross town; taxis are cheap for short hops. For the national park and lakes you need a car, or a tour arranged through the tourist information centre at Bažnyčios g 1.

Safety

Utena is a low-risk small town; the real hazards are dark unlit lake paths, winter ice and unguarded swimming. 112 covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Museum signage is in Lithuanian only; bring a translation app.
  • The Dauniškis Lake musical fountains are often out of order — do not plan an evening around them.
  • Shop alcohol sales stop at 20:00 (15:00 on Sundays) and the drinking age is 20.
  • Lake swimming is unguarded; check the bottom before wading.
