How we chose
We ranked places on four criteria that decide a family trip: how much walking and waiting a child can handle in a day, whether you need a car, how far apart the sights are, and whether there is a wet-weather or rest-day option.
We dropped places that are excellent for adults but hard with kids: long one-road drives with nothing to break them, cities where every sight needs a separate car trip, and parks where the only lodging is far outside the gate.
We also weighted shoulder-season weather. A place that is only comfortable in July, when it is also busiest, scores lower than one that works in May and September.

Best time
Spring and autumn are the safest bets almost everywhere: milder weather and fewer crowds outside school holidays.
Summer works for the northern parks (Yellowstone, the Rockies) and for beaches, but expect heat in the Southwest. Winter is the season for Miami and the Keys.

Getting there
Fly into the region you are visiting, not into a coast you then have to cross. New York and Washington, DC are 3 hours apart by train, so one open-jaw ticket (into one city, home from the other) saves a day.
In the West, a car is the practical choice: rent at the arrival airport and drop it at the departure airport. One-way fees apply. Fly any leg over about 600 km rather than driving it with children.
Book park lodging before you book flights; those are the pieces that sell out.
