How to choose, step by step
Step 1: decide the coast. A first trip that tries New York and California in the same week spends most of it in airports. One coast, two or three bases, 7–14 nights.
Step 2: pick the base that needs no car. New York is the easiest first base: museums, neighbourhoods and Broadway, all on the subway. Washington, DC is about 3 h away by train and its Smithsonian museums are free; Boston is the other walkable swap. Chicago works the same way in the middle of the country.
Step 3: if you want landscapes, build a driving loop instead. Las Vegas is the air gateway to the Grand Canyon and the Utah parks; San Francisco is the base for Yosemite. Both need a car and pre-booked lodging inside or near the park.
Step 4: fly the long legs. Any leg over about 600 km is usually cheaper and faster by plane than by car or train, with the Northeast corridor train as the main exception.
Step 5: book in the right order. Park reservations and park lodging first, then flights, then city hotels. Yosemite and several other parks use timed entry or reservation systems in peak season.

Notes before you book
Distances are the trap. The United States is roughly the size of Europe; a "short" drive between two parks can be 4–6 hours on empty roads with no train alternative. Check the visa and entry requirements early, since an ESTA or visa interview can set your dates more than flight prices do.

Weather decides the western parks. Yellowstone is effectively a Jun–Sep destination, the Grand Canyon South Rim is best in spring and autumn, and desert parks are unpleasant in July. Cities are year-round, with Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct the most comfortable.
Travel insurance matters more here than in most countries: medical care is expensive for visitors, and a cancelled park reservation or a missed connection is a real cost. Buy cover before you book non-refundable lodging.
