United States adventure itinerary: hikes, wildlife and outdoors
For an outdoors trip, fly into Las Vegas and drive a 10-night canyon loop: Las Vegas 1, Zion (Springdale) 2, Bryce Canyon 2, Page 2, Grand Canyon South Rim 2, Las Vegas 1. Do it May–June or September–October (check); summer heat and monsoon storms change the plan. Skip it if you want cities — take the Northeast train route instead.

Overview
The United States is not one adventure trip. It is a set of regions, each needing its own week or two, and the fastest way to ruin one is to bolt two together. Pick a single region, fly into its gateway city, hire a car and drive a loop with two or three nights at each stop.
The canyon loop below is the most efficient first outdoors trip: one flight in and out of Las Vegas and four landscapes that look nothing alike. The alternative, a California loop from San Francisco through Yosemite to Los Angeles, trades desert for granite and coast and needs a one-way car hire.
Distances are the thing to respect. Springdale to Bryce Canyon is roughly 2 hours; Bryce to Page about 2.5 hours; Page to Grand Canyon South Rim about 2.5 hours (check). None of those are day trips — they are transfer mornings, so build them into the plan rather than around it.
Day by day
This is the 10-night canyon loop. It assumes a car collected at Las Vegas airport and returned there, and that you walk something every day. Add a rest day if you are coming from a long flight or a low-altitude home city.
Zion is the shuttle park: from spring through autumn you generally park in Springdale and ride in, so plan the first morning around that rather than driving to the trailhead (check). Bryce is a rim-and-descend park — the Navajo Loop and Queen's Garden are short but steep, and the altitude makes them feel longer than the distance suggests. Page is the water stop: Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon slots, the latter on guided permits only (check). The Grand Canyon South Rim is the finale, and the one place where a sunrise walk on the Rim Trail costs nothing and beats any paid tour.
- Difficulty filter: easy = rim walks and paved trails; moderate = Bryce loops, Horseshoe Bend; hard = Angels Landing, Grand Canyon below-rim trails.
- Export this day-by-day as a PDF before you leave; park wifi is unreliable.
| Day | Base | Activity |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Las Vegas | Land, collect car, sleep early; no strip marathon |
| 2 | Zion (Springdale) | Drive 2.5 h (check); afternoon Emerald Pools or Riverside Walk |
| 3 | Zion (Springdale) | Early shuttle to Angels Landing permit zone or Observation Point (check) |
| 4 | Bryce Canyon | Drive 2 h (check); rim walk, sunset at Sunset Point |
| 5 | Bryce Canyon | Navajo Loop and Queen's Garden before 10am |
| 6 | Page | Drive 2.5 h (check); Lake Powell overlook, Horseshoe Bend at golden hour |
| 7 | Page | Antelope Canyon guided slot tour (check); afternoon swim or kayak |
| 8 | Grand Canyon South Rim | Drive 2.5 h (check); Rim Trail, sunset at Mather or Hopi Point |
| 9 | Grand Canyon South Rim | Sunrise on the rim; short descent below the rim if fit |
| 10 | Las Vegas | Drive 4.5 h back (check); return car, final night |
| 11 | — | Fly home |
Driving times are road estimates and exclude stops, traffic and park entry queues. Nights: Las Vegas 1, Zion 2, Bryce 2, Page 2, Grand Canyon 2, Las Vegas 1 = 10.
Where to stay
Inside the parks, lodging is limited and books out months ahead; outside, gateway towns are cheaper and often closer to food. Springdale sits at the Zion entrance and is walkable to the shuttle. Bryce Canyon City and Tropic are the two bases outside Bryce. Page is a normal town with motels and a few campgrounds. At the Grand Canyon, Tusayan is the nearest outside-the-gate option, about 15 minutes from the South Rim village.
Camping is the cheapest route and the one that needs the most planning: park campgrounds release sites on rolling windows and fill within minutes (check). If you are not ready to book on release day, book a gateway motel instead and treat camping as a bonus.
For a city night at either end, Las Vegas airport hotels are cheaper than the Strip and put you on the road faster the next morning.
Bookings
Book in this order: park lodging or campground, then flights, then car. Park beds are the scarce item, not seats. Anything with a permit — Angels Landing, Antelope Canyon, some Grand Canyon below-rim routes — is a separate booking and often a lottery, so check the current rules before you fix dates.
Some parks run timed-entry or mandatory shuttle systems in peak season; rules change year to year, so confirm for your dates rather than relying on last year's blog post (check). The non-resident annual pass is worth pricing against the individual park fees if you are visiting three or more fee-charging parks (check).
Reserve the car early for one-way hires and for anything with ground clearance. Standard sedans handle all the paved roads in this loop; you do not need four-wheel drive unless you are adding dirt roads.
- Park lodging and campgrounds — book first, months ahead
- Flights into and out of Las Vegas
- Car hire, with drop fee if one-way
- Permits and timed entries: Angels Landing, Antelope Canyon, park entry slots (check current rules)
- Travel insurance covering hiking and cancellation
Costs
The loop is mid-range by US standards because park lodging is expensive and remote towns have few cheap options. Camping or gateway motels pull the total down sharply; in-park lodges and guided slot tours push it up. Figures below are 2026 estimates for one person sharing a car and room, excluding international flights, and all need checking against current rates.
| Item | Estimate (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car hire, 10 days | US$500–800 (check) | Plus fuel; one-way adds a drop fee |
| Fuel | US$150–220 (check) | Depends on the final loop distance |
| Park entry | US$35 per vehicle per park (check) | Annual pass about US$250 (check) |
| Lodging | US$120–250 per night (check) | In-park lodges at the top of the range |
| Camping | US$25–40 per night (check) | Books out fast |
| Food | US$40–70 per day (check) | Gateway towns are cheaper than park cafeterias |
| Guided tours | US$80–120 per person (check) | Antelope Canyon slots |
| Total, 10 nights | US$2,300–3,600 (check) | Per person, sharing |
Excludes international flights and travel insurance. All figures are 2026 estimates and need checking.
Variations
If ten days is too many, cut Page and run Las Vegas → Zion → Bryce → Grand Canyon in seven nights (check). You lose the slot canyons and gain two easier driving days.
If you want wildlife rather than desert, swap the whole loop for Yellowstone: fly into Jackson or Bozeman, base in the park for three nights and drive the Lamar and Hayden valleys at dawn and dusk. June to September only, and lodging books out further ahead than anything in the Southwest (check).
If you are travelling with children, shorten the drives and add a second night at each stop; the family itinerary covers that shape. If this is a honeymoon, the coast version — San Francisco, Big Sur, Santa Barbara — trades hiking for scenery and better food, and the honeymoon itinerary sets it out.
For a first US trip that is not primarily outdoors, the country page's Northeast train route is the safer choice: no car, two cities, four to five nights each.
- Easy: rim walks, paved trails, shuttle-based days
- Moderate: Bryce loops, Horseshoe Bend, half-day hikes
- Hard: Angels Landing, Grand Canyon below-rim trails, long desert drives
Questions people ask
What is a good adventure itinerary for United States?
A 10-night canyon loop: fly into Las Vegas, drive to Zion (2 nights), Bryce Canyon (2), Page (2) and Grand Canyon South Rim (2), then back to Las Vegas (1). One car, four parks. May–June or September–October (check).
How many days do I need for a adventure trip to United States?
Ten nights for the canyon loop, seven if you cut Page (check). Add two nights if you are coming from a long flight or want a rest day between parks. Anything under a week means one park and no loop.
When is the best time for a adventure trip to United States?
May–June and September–October for the desert Southwest: cooler hiking, fewer closures (check). June–September for Yellowstone (check). Avoid July–August in Zion and Grand Canyon if you dislike heat, and check monsoon storm patterns for late summer (check).
Do I need a car?
Yes for any national-park loop. Fly into a gateway city, hire a car there and return it to the same city to avoid a drop fee. The Northeast train route is the one major US itinerary that works without a car.
Do I need reservations for the parks?
Book park lodging and campgrounds first, months ahead. Some parks also use timed-entry or shuttle reservations in peak season, and permits such as Angels Landing are separate. Rules change yearly, so confirm for your dates (check).
