How to get to United Kingdom: airports, flights and border crossings

The UK has one dominant long-haul gateway and a ring of cheaper alternatives. Which you choose changes your transfer time and your onward train more than it changes the flight itself.

Heathrow has the most non-stop routes from the US, Canada, the Gulf and Asia, and the simplest transfer into central London: the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line both run to central stations, with the Elizabeth line the faster and pricier option. Gatwick is smaller and reaches London Victoria by train. Stansted and Luton serve mostly short-haul and low-cost carriers and sit well outside the city. London City is the closest to the City and the smallest.

Outside London, Manchester is the strongest long-haul alternative for northern England and north Wales, with a direct train into Manchester Piccadilly. Edinburgh and Glasgow take some US and Gulf non-stops and suit a Scotland-first trip. Birmingham sits in the middle for the Midlands. For Northern Ireland, fly to Belfast or take a ferry or train from Great Britain; Dublin is a common alternative gateway with onward ground transport.

Fares swing hard by season. July, August and the days around Christmas are the peak; late January to March and November are usually the cheapest. Booking 2–4 months ahead is the usual sweet spot for long-haul. A one-way advance train ticket bought weeks ahead can cost a fraction of an on-the-day fare, so book the airport-to-city leg early if you are not flying into Heathrow.

Decide the shape of the trip first. If London is your base, fly to Heathrow or Gatwick. If you are heading straight to Edinburgh, York or the Lake District, a regional airport or a same-day train from London may beat a second flight.

Book the flight, then book the airport-to-city leg. Advance train tickets are much cheaper than walk-up fares; the National Rail journey planner and each operator's own site sell the same tickets. For Heathrow, compare the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line on price and time before you commit.

Check your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Many visa-free visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) linked to their passport before boarding; it is applied for online and is separate from a visa. Rules change by nationality and over time, so apply through GOV.UK only and confirm your current requirements there before you pay for anything.

Sort the practical arrivals: a UK eSIM or a SIM bought at the airport, a contactless card or phone for the Tube and buses, and travel insurance that covers medical costs, since the NHS is not free for visitors outside some reciprocal arrangements.

If you are arriving by rail, Eurostar runs to London St Pancras from the continent, and the Eurotunnel car shuttle runs from Calais to Folkestone. Ferries cross from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Ireland. Routes and service availability vary by season and operator, so check the operator before you plan around a specific sailing or departure.

The UK is not in the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa or a Schengen trip does not cover it. Ireland and the UK run separate immigration systems even though travel between them is usually visa-free for the same nationalities.

If you are connecting through a UK airport to another country, check whether you need a transit visa or an ETA; rules differ by nationality and by whether you pass through border control.

Baggage and liquids rules at UK airports follow the standard security regime; some airports have moved to newer scanners, so check the specific airport's rules before you pack.

Strikes and weather can disrupt trains and flights, especially in winter. Build a buffer before a fixed booking such as a tour or a ferry.
