United Kingdom
Best places to visit in United Kingdom: top cities, regions and sights
For a first trip, base 4–5 nights in London, then add one city for 2–4 nights: Edinburgh (3), York (2) or Bath (2), all reachable by train. Add the Highlands, Lake District, Cornwall or north Wales only with a second week and usually a car. Skip the long regional hops on a 7-day trip.

Summary: who, when and what it costs
The table below is the short version. Use it to pick a base and a month, then read the detail further down. Daily cost bands are 2026 estimates for one person per day, covering mid-range accommodation, food, local transport and one paid sight; long-distance rail is extra. Treat them as a planning range to check, not a quote.
| Traveller type | Best base | Best months | Daily cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| First visit, 7 days | London + Edinburgh | May–Jun, Sep | £120–180 (check) |
| First visit, 10 days | London, York, Edinburgh | Apr–Jun, Sep | £110–170 (check) |
| Families with children | London, then a longer trip to Cornwall or the Lake District | Jul–Aug (school holidays) | £130–200 (check) |
| Walkers | Lake District, Snowdonia, Scottish Highlands | May–Sep | £90–150 (check) |
| City and culture only | London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester | All year | £110–180 (check) |
| Budget travellers | Hostels in London, Edinburgh, Manchester | Nov–Mar (except holidays) | £60–100 (check) |
Costs vary widely by city; London is the most expensive base. Bands are 2026 estimates to check against current fares and hotel rates before booking. Cornwall and the Lake District need 3–4 nights and usually a car, so they suit a second week rather than a short July–August break.
Step by step: how to choose
Step 1: decide how many nights you have. Seven nights is enough for London plus one city. Ten nights adds a second stop on the same rail line. Fourteen nights is the point where the Highlands, Cornwall or west Wales become realistic.
Step 2: pick your second base by rail line, not by wish list. London to York is about 1 h 50 and York to Edinburgh about 2 h 30, all on the East Coast Main Line. London to Edinburgh direct is about 4 h 20 (check). Advance tickets are much cheaper than walk-up fares, so fix dates early.
Step 3: add a region only if you have a car or a tour. The Scottish Highlands and Skye, the Lake District and Cornwall are slow by public transport. Day tours from Edinburgh and Inverness cover the highlights without driving.
Step 4: match the month to the place, using each destination's own best months. London, York and Bath run April to October. Edinburgh is best May to September. The Highlands and Skye are best May to June and September. Cornwall is best May to June and September. Snowdonia and north Wales are best May to September. August is festival month in Edinburgh and school holiday everywhere, so book accommodation early.
Step 5: book the fixed items first: advance rail tickets, timed tickets for the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, and any August Edinburgh beds. Everything else can stay flexible.
- 7 nights: London 4 + Edinburgh 3
- 10 nights: London 4 + York 2 + Edinburgh 4
- 14 nights: London 4 + Bath 2 + York 2 + Edinburgh 3 + Highlands 3
- Add Oxford or Cambridge as a day trip from London rather than a separate base
Notes and pitfalls
The most common mistake is trying to see England, Scotland and Wales in one week. Travel between regions eats whole days. Two bases done well beat five done badly.
A second mistake is assuming a car is optional everywhere. In cities it is a liability: parking is expensive and central London has a congestion charge. In the Highlands, the Lake District and Cornwall it is often the only practical way to reach the places you came for.
Rail strikes, engineering works and weather can change plans. Keep one flexible day in any itinerary longer than a week. Travel insurance is worth arranging before you book non-refundable tickets and accommodation.
Prices in the UK are quoted in pounds sterling. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including on buses in most cities, but a small amount of cash helps in rural areas.
- Do not book a different city every night
- Book advance rail tickets as soon as dates are fixed
- Check engineering works before relying on a Sunday train
- Reserve August Edinburgh accommodation months ahead
