Treat rail in the UAE as two separate systems. The first is urban: the Dubai Metro (Red and Green lines) plus the Dubai Tram. This is real, running, cheap and useful. The Red Line links the airport area, Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown and the Marina; the tram loops the Marina and JBR. Fares are zone-based, roughly AED 3–8.50 a trip on a silver Nol card, and you tap in and out. Trains run from about 05:00 to midnight Monday to Thursday, later on Friday and from 08:00 on Sunday, with extended hours for New Year and big events.
The second is inter-city: Etihad Rail's passenger service. It is in an introductory phase, with an Abu Dhabi – Fujairah service from 30 June 2026 and a Dubai station due 30 September 2026 — check the timetable and whether your dates fall inside it. Fares are not confirmed; the working figure is from about AED 50 one way — check. Stations are outside the city centres, so budget a taxi at each end, and do not assume a station is walkable from your hotel.
For everything else, the parent country facts still hold: inter-city buses E100/E101/E102 between Abu Dhabi and Dubai cost AED 25–35 and take 2–2 h 30 from Al Ghubaiba or Ibn Battuta, a car with driver is AED 250–350 one way and 1 h 30–2 h door to door, and Abu Dhabi city buses run on a separate Hafilat card at AED 2 plus a small per-km charge. If your trip is Dubai plus Abu Dhabi, buses and taxis do the job; the train is a bonus if it is running on your dates, not a backbone.

Tips
Buy or top up a Nol card at metro stations and use it for the metro, tram and Dubai buses; Abu Dhabi's Hafilat card is separate, so do not expect one card to cover both emirates.
Keep your Nol balance topped up before a weekend or a public holiday; queues at ticket machines build and the last buses back are the ones people miss — check the final departure.
Do not eat or drink on the Dubai Metro; it is fined. Gold Class and women-and-children cars are marked, and standing in the wrong one is a needless argument.
If you are planning around rail, build the trip so a bus or taxi is your fallback: stations are outside the centres and an introductory service can change its timetable at short notice — check.
