Ulm is a compact Danube-side city on the Baden-Württemberg/Bavaria border, best known for the world's tallest church steeple at 161.53 m and as Albert Einstein's birthplace. The old town sits on the north-west bank; Neu-Ulm, across the river, is Bavaria. Most travellers see it in a day, but a night lets you catch the Münster in morning light and the Fischerviertel in the evening.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; the Münster, Rathaus and Fischerviertel are within 15 minutes of each other. Trams (two intersecting lines) and buses cover the rest, useful for Wiblingen Monastery and the Tiergarten. Regional trains and the Länder-Ticket cover day trips.

Watch out

Safety

Ulm is a low-risk city; the real issues are the Münster tower stairs, slippery cobbles in the Fischerviertel after rain, and pickpockets around the station and Christmas market.
  • Danube fog is common in late autumn and early spring; mornings can be grey until midday.
  • The Münster tower climb is 768 steps with no lift; not for anyone with heart or knee issues.
  • Many old-town pensions are small and their owners may not speak much English; the tourist office in the Stadthaus can book for you.
  • Ulm and Neu-Ulm are separate cities in different states; check which side your hotel is on before booking.
