Install four things before you fly: Bolt or Uber for Kampala rides, Google Maps with Uganda downloaded offline, WhatsApp on a local MTN or Airtel SIM, and your bank's card app with travel notifications on. SafeBoda covers Kampala boda-boda trips. Outside Kampala, expect patchy data and cash-first payments, so offline maps and an eSIM or local SIM matter more than any single app.

Details
Sort your connectivity first, because every other app depends on it. MTN and Airtel sell tourist SIMs at Entebbe airport and in Kampala; registration needs your passport and takes a few minutes. An eSIM bought before departure avoids the queue and works the moment you land, but local data bundles are usually cheaper for a longer stay. Mobile money (MTN MoMo or Airtel Money) can be activated on the same SIM and is how many small businesses prefer to be paid.
For getting around Kampala, Uber, Bolt and SafeBoda all work. Bolt has the widest car fleet; SafeBoda started as a boda-boda app and is the one to open if you want a motorbike rather than a car. Fares are quoted in the app, which removes the negotiation that a street-hailed taxi or boda-boda involves. Outside Kampala — Jinja, Entebbe, Fort Portal, Kisoro — coverage is thinner and you may wait or find no car at all, so ask your lodge to arrange a driver instead.
Google Maps is usable in Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja for street-level navigation, but rural roads, park tracks and many lodges are mapped poorly or not at all. Download the offline map for Uganda before you travel, and treat any drive time it gives for park roads as optimistic. For a gorilla trip or a multi-park itinerary, the operator's driver knows the route better than any app.
WhatsApp does the work that email does elsewhere: lodge confirmations, driver coordination, tour-operator updates. Save your driver's number and your lodge's number before you leave Wi-Fi. For translation, English is an official language and widely spoken in towns and tourism, so a translation app is a backup rather than a necessity; Luganda phrases are a courtesy, not a requirement.
Keep your bank's app installed with travel notifications switched on, and check it before you rely on a card. Lodges and larger hotels take cards, often with a surcharge, while markets, boda-bodas and small shops are cash or mobile money. Carry a power bank: charging points are scarce on long drives and in some camps.

Tips
Download the Uganda offline map, your booking PDFs and your gorilla permit copy before you fly — park roads and Bwindi lodges often have no usable data.
Buy an eSIM or airport SIM on arrival and keep your home SIM for banking codes; two lines is the standard setup for a Uganda trip.
