Ubud in December: what to expect

December sits in Bali's rainy season, which runs roughly November to March. Ubud is inland and about 200 m above sea level, so it is a little cooler and often cloudier than the south Bali beaches, and rain here tends to arrive as a heavy afternoon or evening burst rather than a solid grey day.

Expect heat and humidity, with humidity making midday walking tiring. Mornings are usually the drier window, so plan outdoor time early and keep a wet-weather backup for the afternoon.

Rainfall and rain-day counts vary year to year and by source, so treat the numbers below as a planning guide rather than a forecast. Check a short-range forecast before any hike or long scooter ride.

The parent Indonesia page rates December as high for both crowds and prices, driven by the Christmas–New Year period, when Bali resorts fill and beds sell out. Ubud absorbs a large share of those visitors.

Because the month is rated high overall, do not count on low-season rates: book accommodation and any private driver early, and expect traffic on the Ubud–Denpasar and Ubud–Kuta roads.

Restaurants and drivers rarely change prices, but tours and airport transfers do. If your dates are fixed, reserve the places you care about first and build the rest of the trip around them.

Christmas (25 December) is a public holiday in Indonesia and is widely marked in Bali, with resort dinners and decorations; the parent country page notes that Bali and Java resorts fill from Christmas to New Year.

Galungan and Kuningan, the Balinese Hindu festival cycle, falls roughly every 210 days and has landed in December in some years. Check the Balinese calendar for the exact 2026 dates, because the island's roads and some businesses are affected.

Indonesian Independence Day and Nyepi fall in other months.

Plan around the rain rather than against it. Mornings are your outdoor window: the Campuhan Ridge Walk, the rice-field paths around Tegalalang and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary are all better before the clouds build. Start early, carry a light rain jacket and be ready to turn back if the sky darkens.

Wet afternoons suit Ubud's indoor and semi-indoor sights: the Neka Art Museum, the Agung Rai Museum of Art, the Blanco Renaissance Museum and the many small galleries and workshops along Jalan Raya and Jalan Hanoman. Cooking classes, silversmithing, yoga studios and spa afternoons all work well in rain.

Skip or postpone anything that depends on a clear view or dry ground: Mount Batur sunrise treks, long downhill cycling tours, rafting on the Ayung when the river is high, and waterfall visits such as Tegenungan or Tibumana, where paths get slippery after heavy rain. South Bali beaches are a day trip at best in December — expect rough surf.

Pack for heat, humidity and sudden rain. Quick-dry clothing beats cotton, and a light rain jacket or compact umbrella earns its place. Footwear matters more than usual: sandals with grip for town, and closed shoes or trail sandals for muddy rice-field paths.

Bring mosquito repellent — standing water in the wet season means more mosquitoes. Add a dry bag or zip pouch for phone and passport, and a power bank for long days out. A small towel or microfibre cloth is useful for scooter seats and wet benches.

If you are heading to higher ground such as Kintamani or Bedugul, add a light fleece: those areas are noticeably cooler than Ubud (check current conditions).

For temple visits, bring a sarong and sash or check the dress code with your guesthouse before you go.

December is the middle of the wet season, so the months either side tell a similar story with different crowd levels. November is rated caution with low crowds and low prices; January is the wettest month in Bali and Java, with Jakarta flooding; February stays wet but is quiet and cheap.

If dry weather matters more than price, aim for April–October instead: May and September are the usual sweet spots, with mostly dry days and moderate crowds. If you are set on December, book early for the Christmas–New Year period and accept that some afternoons will be washed out.
