  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Ubud centre: palace, market, Saraswati audio walk in Ubud. 4 stops: Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni), Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung), Pura Taman Saraswati and Museum Puri Lukisan. Morning cluster: palace forecourt and market before 09:00, Saraswati Temple pond, lunch at a warung by 12:30; hot and crowded by 11:00.

Ubud Palace (Puri Saren) and the market along Jalan Raya Ubud, north to Jalan Suweta and south to Jalan Karna. Underfoot: narrow pavement, drains, motorbikes; slope: gentle; shade: medium.

Ubud is a royal town, a painters' village and a rice-field district at once. The palace still stands at the crossroads, temples take their turn in a 210-day calendar, and every morning families lay small offerings on the pavement.

Before you start: Temple dress code: sarong and sash; do not step on offerings. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni)

    Pasar Seni Ubud

    Look for

    • Front craft aisles
    • Back aisles
    • Traditional produce market
    • Offering sellers at the back
    • Mask and puppet rows

Stop 1 of 4: Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni). Locally, Pasar Seni Ubud. Arrival point: Across the road from Ubud Palace, at the Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Monkey Forest crossing.

Go at 08:00–09:30 for craft stalls at their calmest; bargain to about half the first price, walk away politely, and eat at the stalls only where food is cooked in front of you.

Look for Front craft aisles: Sarongs, hats, bags, wood carvings. Look for Back aisles: Painting, masks, silver; quieter. Look for Traditional produce market: Early morning fruit, spices and offerings; go before 08:00. For a photo: Offering sellers at the back, early morning. For a photo: Mask and puppet rows, any time.

Do not bargain if you do not intend to buy. Quiet at 08:00; tour groups from 10:00; busy until late afternoon. Allowed at stalls; ask first for portraits. First prices are often two to three times the fair price: counter at about half.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung). It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 50 metres to the north-east. Route: Cross the road to the market. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

    Look for

    • Front courtyard and gate
    • Inner courtyards
    • Dance pavilion

Stop 2 of 4: Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung). Locally, Puri Saren Agung. Arrival point: Walk to the corner of Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Suweta; the palace gate is on the main road.

Walk in before 10:00 for the courtyards, then return at 19:00 for the nightly dance: 20–30 minutes by day, free to enter, and it is still a family home, so stay in the public areas.

Look for Front courtyard and gate: Carved stone gate and the open forecourt facing the main road. Look for Inner courtyards: Carved stone and wood pavilions; some areas are roped off. Look for Dance pavilion: The stage for evening performances; the day visit is just to look.

Stay in the public courtyards; the family quarters are private. Quiet before 09:30; photo groups 10:00–16:00; dance audience gathers from 18:30. Allowed in the courtyards; ask before photographing family members or anyone in ceremonial dress.

    Look for

    • Lotus-pond garden path
    • Temple gate (candi bentar)
    • Café terrace

Stop 3 of 4: Pura Taman Saraswati. Arrival point: Walk west from the palace along Jalan Raya Ubud; the temple lies behind a lotus-pond garden next to a café.

Go at 08:00 or at dusk: a lotus-pond temple you look at from the path, 20–30 minutes, free to enter, and no going through the inner gates unless you are praying.

Look for Lotus-pond garden path: A paved lane between the ponds, with a good view of the temple gates. Look for Temple gate (candi bentar): The carved split gate; look from outside. Look for Café terrace: A seat on the pond with a drink; check the price on the menu.

The palace, the Art Market and Pura Taman Saraswati are within a few minutes of each other, and most first-time visitors spend half a day there.

Do not enter the inner temple unless you are there to pray. Quiet before 09:00; the lotus bloom draws photographers late morning; the evening dance draws a crowd. Allowed from the path; do not photograph worshippers at close range or step off the path.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Museum Puri Lukisan. It's about 5 minutes on foot, about 100 metres to the east. Route: Walk along Jalan Raya Ubud. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
