Twante
A half-day trip from Yangon for pottery and a quiet pagoda: go for the morning, back by lunch. Not worth a night.
Twante is a small delta town 40 minutes from Yangon via ferry and pickup truck. Its draw is the Shwesandaw Pagoda (a scaled-down Shwedagon without the crowds) and the Oh-Bo pottery sheds where you can watch terracotta being made and buy it direct. The trip is bumpy and the town has little else; most visitors return the same day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- The Dallah–Twante ferry may not be running: check at the Pansodan jetty before you buy a ticket.
- Pickup trucks are crowded and bumpy; bring a mask for dust.
- Pottery is unglazed terracotta for everyday use, not decorative art.
- No ATMs confirmed in Twante; bring enough kyat from Yangon.
Twante is quiet and safe for day visitors. The main risks are road accidents on the bumpy pickup ride and heat exhaustion in the dry season. Keep valuables out of sight in crowded transport.
