  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Tuscaloosa is a college town of about 90,000 on the Black Warrior River, home to the University of Alabama. Its draw is campus sights, Crimson Tide football Saturdays, Moundville's prehistoric mounds 14 miles south, and a small but solid BBQ and bar scene. Most travellers pass through on I-20/59 or stop for one night.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread out and transit is limited. Tuscaloosa Transit Authority runs trolley routes (University Shuttle, V.A./University Mall) from the Intermodal Facility Terminal at 601 23rd Ave. Rideshare and taxis cover downtown and campus.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / University Blvd

Walkable to bars, restaurants and the river; closest to campus.

The Strip (University Blvd near campus)

Student bars and cheap eats; loud on game weekends.

McFarland Blvd / I-20-59 exits

Chain hotels with free parking; you need a car for everything.

Northport

Across the river; quieter, cheaper, 10–15 min drive to campus.

Watch out

Safety

Generally a safe college town; the main issues are traffic, summer heat and late-night bar crowds near campus. Use normal city caution after dark and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan indoor stops midday.
  • Game weekends: hotel prices spike and traffic near campus is heavy; book far ahead.
  • Some bars are licensed as restaurants and may ask under-21s to leave around 22:00.
  • Distances between sights are long; without a car you will rely on rideshare.
