Türi

Stop in Türi for 2–4 hours only if your Tallinn–Türi train continues to Viljandi or a return connection fits: the church, Viljandi Street and the museums sit within 1 km (0.6 mi) of the station.

Türi is a small town of about 5,400 people in North Estonia, 105 km from Tallinn, that calls itself Estonia's spring capital. It grew as a railway junction and radio-broadcasting centre in the 1920s and 1930s, so it holds an unusual run of interwar buildings for its size, plus a medieval church with a rebuilt bell tower. Almost everything sits along one street, a kilometre from the station, which makes it a half-day stop rather than a base.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Estonia ↗Estonia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Estonian sources for your passport.
  • Estonia ↗The land border with Russia is not a route for casual travel; check your government's advice before going near it.
  • Estonia ↗Winter tyres are required in the cold months; rental cars include them, but confirm if you drive.

Getting around

Walk. The station to the church and the main sights is barely more than a kilometre, and everything interesting is on or near Viljandi Street. Local bus 10 runs from the bus station along Paide Street every 10–15 min on weekdays and about every 30 min at weekends.

Door to door: check

Local bus towards Paide; check current connections and journey time

Paide has more onward bus options than Türi; confirm the timetable before you go.

Door to door: check

Train towards Viljandi on the Tallinn–Viljandi line; check the timetable for direct services

Castle hill and a bigger town; only some Tallinn–Türi trains continue here.

Door to door: About 2 h

Bus on the Rakvere–Pärnu route, about 1.5 h

Only 5–6 buses a day pass through Türi; check the timetable first.

Door to door: About 2 h

Train, 1.5–2 h, 4–5 a day

Check the timetable and ticket requirements in advance; services are sparse.

Town centre, Viljandi Street

Market, shops and cafés on the axis between the station and the square; walkable to every sight.

Veskisilla, 1 km towards Paide

Converted watermill hotel with parking; needs a car or a 15-min walk into town.

Outskirts and nearby villages

Guesthouses and hostels around the pond and in Kehtna or Mäo; only worth it with your own transport.

Watch out

Safety

Türi is a quiet small town and street crime is rare. The real risks are winter ice on pavements, unlit roads after dark outside the centre, and the sparse evening bus and train service.
  • Trains from Tallinn run only 4–5 times a day: check the return times before you commit to a day trip.
  • The station building has no fixed opening hours and a small waiting room; do not count on it as a shelter.
  • The Local History and Broadcasting museums share one building and open Tue–Sat only.
  • Some cafés and the market keep short or unposted hours: check before walking out.
