Tullamore is the county town of County Offaly, roughly in the centre of Ireland and on the Grand Canal. It is a working town rather than a sight-heavy stop: a Gothic castle, two whiskey distilleries within 10 km, and a compact centre you can walk in an hour. Most travellers use it as a single night between Dublin and the Shannon, or as a base for Lough Boora and Clonmacnoise.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk. Buggy's Coach 835 loops the town and the south-edge retail park. You need your own wheels for Charleville, Lough Boora, Durrow and Croghan Hill; Practical has car hire in town but airport pickup is usually cheaper. Taxi ranks at the railway station and on William Street.

- Buses to Dublin are timed for commuters: last inbound bus leaves around 13:30, so a day trip to Dublin needs an early start.
- Rural roads are narrow and unlit; drive on the left and watch for tractors.
Tullamore is a low-crime town and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are rural roads after dark, uneven canal towpaths, and late-night noise around closing time on William Street.
