Best day trips from Toronto: how to get there and what to see

Toronto is a small Ohio River town in Jefferson County, close to the Pennsylvania and West Virginia lines. That position makes Pittsburgh the strongest day trip and Steubenville the easiest one. Times below are driving times in normal traffic; add time for rush hour into Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is the day trip most visitors pick. The drive is straightforward, and the city packs a lot into a small downtown: the Carnegie museums in Oakland, the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Shore, the Duquesne and Monongahela inclines for the skyline view, and the Strip District for a morning of food shopping.

Park in a downtown or North Shore garage and walk or use the light rail under the river. A weekday arrival before 9am avoids the worst tunnel traffic. If you are back late, the Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill tunnels are the bottlenecks — leave after 6:30pm or accept the delay.

Steubenville is the closest real town and the only one plausibly reachable without a car, if a regional bus is running. It has a compact downtown, a riverfront and a historic fort site nearby. Treat it as a half-day, not a full one.

Wheeling, West Virginia, about an hour away, is the better half-day if you have a car. The Victorian downtown, the suspension bridge and the riverfront park make a comfortable few hours, and Oglebay Park is a short drive further out. Both towns are quiet on Sundays — check opening hours before you commit.

Columbus is about 2 hours 30 minutes each way, which makes it a long day but a doable one if you leave early. COSI, the science museum, the Short North arts district and the German Village bookshops fill a day. Cleveland is a similar distance north and works the same way.

Anything beyond these — Cincinnati, Erie, the Hocking Hills — is better as an overnight. Driving 3 hours or more each way and then sightseeing leaves no margin for traffic, weather or a wrong turn on the way home.

Fuel is the main variable. A mid-size car on these routes costs roughly US$10–20 per 100 km at 2026 prices, so Pittsburgh is a US$25–35 round trip in fuel before parking. City garages add US$10–25 for a few hours. Bus fares on regional routes are usually cheaper than driving but run on limited schedules.

Check the weather the night before: river fog and winter ice on the bridges can slow the drive more than traffic does. Keep a paper or offline map, because mobile coverage is patchy in the river valleys between towns.

If you are relying on a bus, confirm the return trip as well as the outbound one — some regional services run once or twice a day and not at all on Sundays. Book any museum timed tickets online before you leave.
