Getting around in Bishkek
Central Bishkek's wide, flat avenues are easier going than many post-Soviet capitals, but pavements have open drains, holes and uneven paving throughout, and Osh Bazaar is genuinely hard on wheels. Plan car rides for the bazaar and pick a hotel with confirmed lift access.
- Pavements:
- Open drains, holes and uneven paving are common even on main avenues; watch your footing, especially at dusk.
- Getting around:
- Ride-hailing apps are the practical step-free option; public minibuses (marshrutkas) are not accessible.
- Hotels:
- Larger hotels near Ala-Too Square are more likely to have lifts; smaller guesthouses often do not — ask before booking.
- Toilets:
- Accessible toilets are rare outside malls and larger hotels.
Medicines and health on the ground
The Kyrgyzstan guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.

Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
