Thermopolis

Give Thermopolis one full day and one night: soak at the free state-park bathhouse, see the Dinosaur Center, then drive on. Two nights only if you add Legend Rock.

Thermopolis is a small hot-springs town in Northwest Wyoming, built around Hot Springs State Park and one of the largest mineral springs anywhere. Most travellers stop for a night between Yellowstone and Casper, soak in the free bathhouse, and see the dinosaur museum. The town is walkable; the surrounding sites need a car.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes. Hot Springs State Park is a short drive or a 20-minute walk from downtown. Legend Rock and Wind River Canyon need a car; there is no useful local bus.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town. The real risks are bison in the state park, hot-spring water above body temperature, and winter roads; the hospital ER is open 24 hours.
  • Bison in the state park: view only from inside a vehicle, never on foot.
  • Legend Rock is key-access October–April; pick up the key at the bathhouse, chamber or county museum.
  • Winter driving on US 20/WY 789 can close with snow; check Wyoming road conditions before you set out.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the drive to Legend Rock and through Wind River Canyon.
