Theni is a valley district in southwestern Tamil Nadu: a hot, dry town at 300 m with waterfalls and tea hills within an hour's drive. Base in Theni town or Periyakulam for 2–3 nights, hire a car with driver for the hills, and treat the district as a slow add-on to Madurai rather than a destination on its own.
