Thailand on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips

A backpacker day in Thailand runs about ฿900–1,700 (roughly $26–49) in 2026: dorm or fan room, street food, buses and shared songthaews. Mid-range travellers spend ฿2,050–4,000. Islands cost 30–60% more than the mainland, so base on the mainland first and move to the coast once you know your daily burn.

Details

Thailand is one of the few places where the budget tier is genuinely comfortable rather than a compromise. A dorm bed or a fan room with a shared bathroom costs ฿300–600, street food covers three meals for ฿300–450, and local buses, songthaews and third-class trains keep transport at ฿100–200 a day. Temples and national parks add ฿100–250. That lands a backpacker day at ฿900–1,700.

The jump to mid-range is mostly the bed. A 3★ hotel room with air conditioning runs ฿700–1,500, sit-down meals ฿600–1,000, Grab rides ฿250–500, and a massage or a day tour pushes sights and extras higher. Budget ฿2,050–4,000 a day. Comfort tier, with a 4–5★ hotel or resort and private transfers, starts around ฿6,000 and can reach ฿13,500.

Two things break a budget faster than daily spending: island boat transfers at ฿500–1,500 per person per leg, and domestic flights at roughly ฿2,000 one way with a bag. Neither is in the daily figures. The other trap is geography. Islands such as Samui and Phi Phi cost 30–60% more than the mainland for the same standard of room and food, so a week on the mainland followed by a few island days is cheaper than the reverse.

Season moves the numbers more than any habit. The 20 December – 5 January window roughly doubles resort rates, and the same room in green season can cost half. If your dates are flexible, shifting a trip by two weeks changes the total more than any packing decision.

Tips

Cash is the budget lever. Cards work in malls, hotels and many restaurants, but street food, markets, boats and small taxis are cash only. ATMs charge about ฿220 per foreign-card withdrawal, so take larger sums less often and keep ฿20 and ฿100 notes for drivers and boat operators who cannot change ฿1,000.

Eat where locals eat. A stall pad thai is ฿60–100; the same dish in a tourist-strip restaurant is several times that. Beer is ฿50–70 at 7-Eleven against ฿90–150 in a bar. A one-hour Thai massage is ฿300–500, and the BTS Skytrain in Bangkok is ฿17–65 per ride, which is usually faster and cheaper than a Grab at ฿100–180 for 5 km.

Book beds on arrival in the low season and online in the high season. Fan rooms are ฿300–600 and only uncomfortable in the hottest weeks; air conditioning is worth paying for in April and May. Overnight and third-class trains are cheap and double as a night of accommodation, though seats and sleepers sell out around holidays.

Carry travel insurance that covers medical care and any motorbike riding you plan to do. A scooter accident is the single most common way a cheap trip becomes an expensive one, and many policies exclude riding without the right licence.

  • Withdraw ฿10,000 at a time instead of ฿2,000 to cut ATM fees.
  • Eat the ฿60–100 stall version of any dish before trying the restaurant version.
  • Take the BTS or MRT in Bangkok instead of a car at peak hours.
  • Use overnight trains as transport and a bed in one.
  • Shift dates out of 20 Dec – 5 Jan if you can.
  • Keep small notes for boats, buses and markets.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does a budget trip to Thailand cost per day?

About ฿900–1,700 (roughly $26–49) per person per day in 2026 for a dorm or fan room, street food, local buses and shared songthaews. Mid-range travel runs ฿2,050–4,000. Islands cost 30–60% more than the mainland.

What is the cheapest month to visit Thailand?

Green season, roughly May–October outside the 20 December – 5 January peak, is usually cheapest for rooms and flights (check). Shifting a trip by two weeks out of the December window can halve resort rates.

How can I save money in Thailand?

Sleep in dorms or fan rooms, eat at stalls rather than tourist restaurants, use BTS, MRT, buses and songthaews, withdraw larger cash sums to limit the ฿220 ATM fee, and use overnight trains as both transport and a bed.
