The Panhandle is one flat, windy rectangle of plains with two real cities and one headline sight. Amarillo puts you 30 minutes from Palo Duro Canyon and on I-40, the old Route 66 corridor; Lubbock is 2 hours south and only worth the detour if you are continuing to New Mexico or the Hill Country. Come for the canyon and the road, not for a city break.
