Tbilisi in June: what to expect

June is the transition month in Tbilisi: spring rain fades, summer heat builds. Expect warm, mostly sunny days with highs around 27–30 °C and nights near 15–17 °C. The heat is dry rather than humid, so shade and a water bottle handle most of it; the worst afternoons come in the last ten days, when the city can push past 30 °C.

Rain usually arrives as short, heavy afternoon or evening thunderstorms rather than grey all-day drizzle — an hour under a café awning and it passes. Pack a light rain shell rather than an umbrella you have to carry all day. The mountains are a different story: Kazbegi and Svaneti sit 10–15 °C cooler, and the Tusheti road typically opens around June (check), which is why this is the month hiking season begins.

UV is strong at this latitude and altitude. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses matter more than a jacket during the day.

June is high season in Georgia, but not yet the peak. The first half of the month is noticeably calmer and cheaper than July and August; from roughly the third week, school holidays in Europe and the region push hotel rates and Old Town restaurant queues up. Book guesthouses and any Kazbegi or Kakheti overnight stays a few weeks ahead if you are travelling after mid-June.

Prices sit at medium: above May, below the July–August high. Expect the biggest jumps in the Old Town, on wine-tour day rates and on car-with-driver trips to the mountains. Marshrutka and train fares barely move. If you are flexible, the first ten days of June give you most of the weather at May-ish prices.

Weekends are busier than weekdays in Tbilisi itself, and the 26 May Independence Day holiday can spill a little demand into early June.

Georgia's big public holidays fall outside June, so the month is mostly about outdoor life rather than festivals: open-air concerts and terrace dining in the Old Town, day trips into the mountains, and the start of the summer season along the Black Sea coast at Batumi.

Check local listings for the exact dates of open-air events, wine festivals in Kakheti and any Tbilisi city programme — these shift year to year and are best confirmed a few weeks out.

Base in Tbilisi for the Old Town, the sulphur baths and the funicular, then use the good weather for day trips. Mtskheta is 30 minutes by car or train and works as a half-day. Kakheti — Telavi, Sighnaghi — is the wine day, roughly two hours each way, and worth an overnight in June. Kazbegi is the mountain day: the road is usually clear by June, but check conditions before you set out.

If you want the sea, Batumi is a five-hour train ride and the beach season starts now. For hiking, Svaneti and Tusheti open up this month; both need more than a day and a plan for the roads.

Light, breathable clothing for the city, plus one warmer layer for evenings and mountain days. A compact rain shell beats an umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes handle Tbilisi's cobbles and staircases better than sandals. Add sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle.

For churches — and you will visit several — bring something to cover shoulders and knees, and a scarf for women. If you are heading to Kazbegi or Svaneti, add a fleece or light jacket and sturdier shoes.

May is cooler and greener with fewer crowds; July and August are hotter in Tbilisi and the peak for the mountains and Batumi. If your priority is hiking rather than city weather, September is the strongest month of the year.
