Tbilisi in April: what to expect

April is Tbilisi's transition month. Winter's grey lifts, the plane trees leaf out and daytime temperatures climb into the mid-teens to high teens Celsius. Mornings and evenings still need a jacket, and a cold snap with rain is normal in the first half of the month.

Expect changeable days rather than steady sunshine: a warm, clear afternoon can follow a wet morning. Rain usually arrives as short showers, not all-day downpours, so a compact umbrella and a waterproof layer matter more than a heavy coat.

The parent country data rates Tbilisi and the east as "best" from April, and the city sits in the mild lowland zone — hot dry summers, mild winters. April is the start of that good stretch, not the peak of it.

April is medium season. The country data puts crowds at 3 of 5 and prices at 3 of 5 — noticeably quieter and cheaper than July, August and September, but busier than the winter months.

The main exception is Orthodox Easter. Georgia takes a four-day break around it (Friday to Monday), churches fill at midnight and families visit cemeteries on the Monday. In years when Easter falls in April, domestic travel spikes and Tbilisi hotels and Kakheti guesthouses fill at the weekend. Check the date before booking.

9 April, National Unity Day, is a public holiday remembering 9 April 1989. It has low impact on travel — some offices close, the city keeps working.

April's calendar is thin on festivals but heavy on public holidays. The fixed date is 9 April, National Unity Day. Orthodox Easter is the movable one: it lands in April in some years and May in others, and when it is in April it dominates the month.

Beyond the holidays, spring itself is the event — blossom in the city parks, the first warm terrace days and the start of the lowland travel season. Big cultural festivals cluster later in the year, so April is a month for the city rather than for a specific show.

Stay in Tbilisi for the city itself: the old town, the sulphur baths, Rustaveli Avenue and the funicular up to Mtatsminda are all comfortable on foot in April weather. This is one of the best months to walk rather than ride.

For day trips, Mtskheta is close and easy in any weather, and Kakheti wine country is pleasant in spring — the vines are bare but the towns and cellars are open and quiet. Gori and Kartli work as day trips too.

Leave the high mountains for later. Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road are still cold in April and the road can close; the country data rates the Greater Caucasus as merely "cool" this month, with hiking from July. Batumi and the Black Sea coast are cool and often wet — not a beach month.

Pack for two seasons in one day. Layers are the answer: a light base, a warm mid-layer and a waterproof outer shell. Add a compact umbrella, comfortable broken-in walking shoes for the cobbled old town, and sunglasses for the bright afternoons.

For the Orthodox Easter period, bring something that covers shoulders and knees if you plan to enter churches — many require it, and headscarves are often provided at the door. A small daypack covers day trips to Mtskheta and Kakheti.

March is still grey in Tbilisi and the Military Road is snowy — April is the upgrade. May is greener and warmer and is arguably the best lowland month, but crowds and prices stay medium. June brings the mountains into play and pushes crowds to high.

If your trip is flexible and you want the city at its best, April and May are close; pick April for lower prices and fewer people, May for warmer, greener days.
