Best day trips from Tbilisi: how to get there and what to see

Distances and times are by road from central Tbilisi. Prices are 2026 estimates for a group tour seat; a private car with driver costs more but lets you set the pace and stop for photos.

Mtskheta is the ancient capital and a UNESCO site, 30 minutes north of Tbilisi. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the Jvari church on the hill above the river are the two stops. It works as a half day, and you can combine it with the drive to Kazbegi if you are heading north anyway.

Kazbegi, officially Stepantsminda, sits under Mt Kazbek at the end of the Georgian Military Highway. The draw is Gergeti Trinity Church above the village, reached by a steep walk of about an hour or by 4x4 from the square. The drive passes the Ananuri fortress and the Jvari pass viewpoint. It is a long day: leave Tbilisi by 08:00 and expect to be back after dark.

Sighnaghi is a small walled town in Kakheti with views over the Alazani valley; Telavi is the regional centre and a base for Alaverdi and other monasteries. Both are wine country, and most tours include one or two winery tastings. If you only want wine and no driving, a Tbilisi natural-wine bar evening is the cheaper substitute.

Gori has the Stalin Museum and is close to Uplistsikhe, the rock-hewn town. Borjomi is a spa town with a national park and the mineral water spring in the central park. Both are doable as day trips but reward an overnight if you have the time.

Group tours are the cheapest way to cover long distances, since the per-seat price includes transport and often a guide. Private cars cost more but split well across three or four people. Marshrutkas are cheapest of all but leave when full and rarely run late in the day, which rules out a comfortable return from Kazbegi or Kakheti.

Public transport exists but is slow. Marshrutkas to Kazbegi leave from Didube station, and to Kakheti towns from Ortachala or Samgori; ask at your guesthouse for the current departure point, as these change. For a full-day trip, a shared tour or a hired car is the realistic option.

Winter changes the picture. The road over the Jvari pass to Kazbegi can close after heavy snow, and mountain trips are often cancelled. Kakheti and Mtskheta run year-round. Check the forecast and road status the day before, and keep a flexible day in your Tbilisi plan.

If you are short on time, do Mtskheta in the morning and spend the afternoon in the old town. A single long day trip plus two days in Tbilisi is a reasonable minimum for a first visit.
