Tarija is Bolivia's wine country: a low, mild southern city at about 1,850 m, ringed by high-altitude vineyards and the Cordillera de Sama. It is not on the classic La Paz–Uyuni–Sucre loop, so it costs a flight or a long bus ride. Come for bodegas, Singani, the April grape harvest and warm, easy days — not for big monuments.

Tarija city and the wine valleys: Mild year-round; the dry winter and spring months May–November are the prime travel season. April brings the grape harvest festival. Rain concentrates in the southern summer, December–March.
Cordillera de Sama: Cold and exposed at altitude; the wet months make the access tracks worse.

Tarija is one of Bolivia's mildest departments — no need for the cold-weather kit you pack for the Altiplano.
