Santa Cruz is Bolivia's lowland half: hot, green, low-altitude and the country's economic engine. The city itself is a transport hub with markets and nightlife, not a sight. What earns the trip is around it: the Samaipata valley and El Fuerte, and the Jesuit mission towns of the Chiquitos east toward Brazil. Come here first if you want to acclimatise before La Paz, or last if you are crossing to Paraguay or Brazil.
