Weather by zone: north, mountain, coast, south
Tanzania is big enough that one national forecast is useless. The northern circuit (Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) is dry June–October and again January–February; the short rains in November–December are light, while the long rains in April–May close some camps and turn tracks to mud.
On Kilimanjaro, the climbing windows are January–March and June–October. April–May is wet and often closed to ascents. Summit nights sit below −10 °C in every month, so the season changes the trail, not the cold.
Zanzibar and the coast (Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje, Dar es Salaam, Pemba) are humid year-round. June–October and January–February are the beach windows; April–May brings the heavy masika rains and several resorts shut. The southern parks — Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha, Mikumi — have one long wet season from November to April, and many camps open only June–October. The western lakes (Mahale, Gombe, Katavi, Tanganyika) follow the same pattern, with chimp trekking easiest in the dry months when the animals come down the slopes.

Cheapest and busiest times
The cheapest months are April and May, when green-season rates apply and some camps drop prices hard to fill rooms in the rain. Late November, during the short rains, is the other soft window. You trade some road access and a few closed properties for lower rates and empty viewpoints.
The most expensive and busiest stretch is July to September, when the herds are in the north and everyone wants the Mara River crossings. Christmas and New Year on Zanzibar is the second spike. For August, book lodges and Kilimanjaro permits 6–12 months ahead; for July and September, 4–6 months is usually enough. If your dates are fixed and your budget is not, shift to late June or early October for similar conditions at lower prices.

Events and holidays that move prices
Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr (dates move each year, falling in February–March in the mid-2020s) slow Zanzibar and the coast by day, and Eid brings domestic travel. Sauti za Busara, the Stone Town music festival, fills hotels in February. Easter, Karume Day (7 April) and Union Day (26 April) are public holidays with limited local impact, while New Year and Zanzibar Revolution Day (12 January) make Stone Town busy. What to book, and when
Flights into Kilimanjaro (JRO) and Zanzibar (ZNZ) are the first thing to lock, then lodges on the northern circuit, then internal flights between the Serengeti and Zanzibar. Kilimanjaro permits and hut beds sell out in the July–September window, so treat them like a lodge booking. For the practical side — visas, entry rules and the mandatory inbound insurance from 1 October 2026 — check the country pages before you pay for anything.
