Százhalombatta
Skip as a base. Come as a half-day from Budapest for the Matrica Museum and Bronze Age park, or stop 2–3 h on the way to Székesfehérvár.
Százhalombatta is a Danube-side town of about 18,600 people, 27 km southwest of Budapest, and its name means "one hundred tumuli" after the Iron Age burial mounds at its edge. The draw is archaeology: the Matrica Museum and the open-air Régészeti Park over a 4,000-year-old tell settlement. Two to three hours covers it; there is no local bus, so plan on walking or a taxi between the two sites.
