Switzerland in April: what to expect

April is a transition month, and the gap between regions is wider than in any other month. The Plateau — Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne — warms quickly once the Hochnebel fog of winter lifts, but showers pass through often and a cold north wind can still bring snow down to 600–800 m for a day or two.

The Alps are the problem. Resorts above about 1,800 m still hold their snowpack, which is good news for skiing, but valley trails at 1,000–1,500 m are wet, muddy and often still snow-covered. The high passes — Furka, Grimsel, Susten, Nufenen — usually stay closed into May or June (check the current status before planning a drive).

Ticino and the Lake Geneva shore are the warmest and driest options, with Ticino's camellias and magnolias in bloom. Zermatt and the Engadin stay cold but often sunny, which makes them the best bet if you want both a walk in the valley and a morning on the slopes.

April is one of the two quietest months of the Swiss year, along with November. School holidays in most cantons fall in the two weeks around Easter, so the first half of the month can be busy in ski resorts and on the trains to them; after Easter the country empties out noticeably.

Hotel rates sit in the shoulder band — cheaper than February or July, more expensive than November. Mountain huts and many resort hotels close for the between-seasons break right after Easter, so check opening dates before you commit to a specific village. City hotels in Zurich, Basel, Geneva and Lucerne stay open and often discount midweek.

Rail is the one cost that does not move: Swiss Travel Pass and point-to-point tickets are priced the same year-round. Book scenic trains (Glacier Express, Bernina Express) ahead if you travel in Easter week.

The month's signature event is Zurich's Sechseläuten, held on the third Monday of April, when guilds parade in historic costume and a snowman effigy (the Böögg) is burned on a bonfire — the faster its head explodes, the better the summer is said to be. Expect the city centre to be crowded and some streets closed.

Easter itself (Good Friday to Easter Monday) is a public holiday across most cantons. Shops close on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and Easter Sunday is the last big ski weekend of the season at many resorts. Confirm the exact dates for the year you travel.

Elsewhere, April is a month of local, low-key events: spring markets, the start of the lakeside season on Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich, and blossom festivals in Ticino and the Fribourg region. Check cantonal tourism sites for the specific week you are there.

Base yourself low and travel up. Zurich, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne and Lucerne all work well in April: museums, old towns and lake boats, with the option of a mountain day when the forecast is clear. Ticino is the strongest pick — Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona are warm enough for terraces, and the Gotthard base tunnel puts Zurich about two hours away.

For snow, head high. Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Verbier and the Engadin resorts keep skiing into late April, and glacier areas run longer. For walking, stay under about 1,200 m: Lake Geneva's Lavaux terraces, the Ticino lake shores, and the lower Bernese Oberland valleys around Interlaken, Thun and Brienz.

Skip the classic high-Alpine hikes. Trails above 1,500 m are usually still under snow, and many cable cars and mountain railways close for maintenance right after Easter — check each lift's opening dates before you build a day around it.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, and shoes with grip matter more than anything else; valley paths are wet and city pavements are often slick. Bring sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen for glacier days, where snow reflection is strong even when the valley is cloudy.

If you plan to ski, most resorts rent skis, boots and helmets, so you can travel light. For city days, layers you can shed at midday work better than a heavy coat. A small umbrella is worth the space — April showers are short but frequent.

March is colder and still a full ski month, with quiet cities. May is warmer and greener but has the same problem as April: many mountain lifts close for maintenance, so hiking is limited to low trails. June is when the lifts reopen and the high trails start to clear, though snow can linger above 2,000 m into July.

If your priority is hiking, wait for June or September. If it is skiing, come in February or March. If it is cities and lakes at low prices, April is a good fit — just keep your plans flexible and check lift and pass status week by week.
