Sussex is a small agricultural town of about 4,300 people on the Trans-Canada Highway, 72 km northeast of Saint John and 80 km southwest of Moncton. It is the self-styled covered bridge capital of Atlantic Canada, with eight of Kings County's sixteen bridges within about 10 minutes of downtown, plus a regimental museum, an agriculture museum and a long ice-cream tradition. Most travellers pass through; one night is enough unless you are chasing covered bridges or the September balloon fiesta.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the covered bridges, Poley Mountain and the Fundy Trail Parkway are all outside town. Maritime Bus stops at the Circle K/Irving at Four Corners on Route 890, about 1 h 15 min from both Saint John and Moncton. Downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Route 1 and Route 114, deer on the back roads at dawn and dusk, and seasonal closures that strand a plan made for July in November.
  • Many sights are seasonal: the regimental and agriculture museums and the drive-in run roughly June to early September.
  • Farm equipment uses the same roads in haying and harvest season: pass only when you can see clear road.
  • Cell coverage thins on the back roads toward Millstream, Knightville and Dutch Valley.
