Suphanburi is a low-rise provincial town of about 26,000 people, 100–115 km northwest of Bangkok, with an old wall, a riverside temple and a 123 m viewing tower. Most travellers pass through on the way to Sam Chuk's old market or use it as a quiet base for the western provinces. Two nights covers the town and one outlying sight; a day trip from Bangkok is possible but rushed.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 20–30 min end to end. For anything outside it, use songthaew, tuk-tuk or a rented car; buses and vans run to other districts but are slow and signed in Thai. No train station in the town centre: the daily train uses Suphan Buri station on the outskirts (check).

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime provincial town; the real risks are road travel (fast two-lane highways, motorbikes), heat in Mar–May and unposted tuk-tuk fares. Use 191 for police and 1155 (≈ US$40) for tourist police.
  • Outlying sights (Bueng Chawak, Don Chedi, Sam Chuk, Phu Toei) are 30–80 km apart: without a car, each becomes a half-day.
  • English is limited outside hotels; have place names written in Thai.
  • Songthaew and tuk-tuk fares are not posted: agree the price before you get in.
  • Phu Toei National Park and some caves close or flood in the rainy season: check locally before setting out.
