The Sunshine Coast is a 180 km strip of mainland BC that no road reaches: you arrive by ferry from Horseshoe Bay, and a second ferry splits the lower coast (Gibsons, Sechelt) from the upper coast (Powell River, Lund). It rewards slow travel — rainforest trails, marine parks, kayaking, artists' studios — not a rushed day trip. Base in Gibsons or Sechelt for 2–3 nights; add Powell River only if you have 5+ nights and want Desolation Sound and the Sunshine Coast Trail.

A day trip from Vancouver means roughly 4 hours of ferry and driving for a few hours on the coast — stay at least one night.
BC Transit does not connect Half Moon Bay (north of Sechelt) to the Earls Cove ferry terminal; without a car you need the Sunshine Coast Connector bus, which runs only four days a week.
Wildlife is real: black bears, cougars and wolves live here. Keep distance, and never approach seal pups on the beach — the mother may abandon them.

Lower coast (Gibsons, Sechelt): Mild, wet winters and dry summers; the coast is marketed on about 2,400 hours of annual sunshine, concentrated May–September.
Upper coast (Powell River, Lund): Similar pattern, slightly cooler; the Powell Forest Canoe Route is best run June–October.

Summer (June–September) is the reliable window for hiking, kayaking and boat tours; winter is quiet, grey and wet, with many seasonal businesses closed.
