Sulawesi is four long peninsulas joined by mountains, and the roads between them are slow. Flying between Makassar and Manado costs about 2 hours; driving the Trans-Sulawesi Highway takes days. Choose the north for reefs and volcanoes, the south for Toraja highland culture and Makassar food, and treat the rest as a second trip.
