Maluku is two provinces and 600-plus islands spread over open ocean, so the trip is decided by which airport you land at. Ambon (AMQ) is the southern hub: colonial forts, coral in Ambon Bay, and fast boats to the Lease Islands and Seram. Ternate (TTE) is the northern hub: a volcano you can climb, sultanate history, and boats to Tidore and Morotai. Banda Islands is the historic prize but flights are small and fill early. Pick one base, add one island, and leave the rest for a second trip.
