Stockport is a mill town 10 min by train from Manchester Piccadilly, on the West Coast Main Line, so many London and Birmingham trains stop here before Manchester. Its draw is a compact cluster of council museums (Air Raid Shelters, Staircase House, Hat Works, Bramall Hall), the restored 1930s Plaza cinema and a strong pub and brewery scene. Most visitors see the centre in a day and use it as a base for the airport or the Peak District edge at Marple and Lyme Park.
