Stockholm airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Stockholm is a small village in Pepin County, western Wisconsin, on the Mississippi River. It has no airport of its own, so every trip starts with a drive from a larger city. The table below compares the realistic choices.

From Minneapolis–St. Paul International, take I-494 or I-94 east toward Wisconsin. The drive to Stockholm is roughly 100–130 km depending on the route, and takes about 1.5–2 hours without heavy traffic. From Rochester International, head north on US-52 and then west on I-94 or US-14; the drive is shorter, about 1–1.5 hours.

A car is the practical choice once you arrive. The village is small, and the surrounding coulees, orchards and river bluffs are spread out. Rental desks at MSP are reached by the airport's light-rail or shuttle; at RST the desks are in the terminal. Book ahead in summer and fall, when demand is highest.

Winter driving is a real factor from November to March. Snow and ice are common, and some rural roads are plowed later than the interstate. Check the forecast and allow extra time.

There is no direct bus or train from MSP or RST to Stockholm. Intercity coaches run along the I-94 corridor between the Twin Cities and Eau Claire, stopping in towns such as Menomonie or Eau Claire. From there you would need a taxi, rideshare or a pre-arranged pickup for the final 30–60 minutes.

Amtrak's long-distance Empire Builder crosses Wisconsin on its way between Chicago and the Twin Cities, but it does not stop in Stockholm. The nearest practical rail connections are in the Twin Cities or further east; from a station you would still need a car or a long taxi ride. Treat rail as a way to reach the region, not the village.

If you are traveling without a car, line up the final leg before you arrive. Rural rideshare coverage is thin, and a driver may not be available late at night.

A taxi or rideshare from MSP to Stockholm is possible but expensive: expect roughly US$150–250 or more for the distance, and surge pricing can push it higher. Confirm the fare in the app before you request the ride, and check that the driver will take a trip that far out of the metro area.

From Rochester the fare should be lower, but still significant. Rideshare availability in Pepin County is limited, so a return trip may need to be booked in advance or arranged with a local driver. If you are in a group, splitting a taxi can be cheaper than several bus tickets plus a final leg.
