St George's is a hilly harbour capital and Grand Anse is the beach base 15 minutes south: sleep at Grand Anse, do the Carenage and Fort George on a morning by taxi or bus, and book the airport taxi before you fly.

The honest verdict

St George's fits in half a day on foot around the Carenage and up to Fort George, and the hills make walking harder than the map shows. The trips that go wrong are the uphill walks in midday heat, the Sunday closures, and hurricane-season weather from June to November. Four small areas cover the capital and Grand Anse; keep one bed and use taxis or minibuses for the rest.
