Set up your phone before departure, not at the airport arrivals hall on hotel Wi-Fi. Download the apps, log in, add a payment card, and save offline maps while you still have a fast connection at home.
Ride-hailing: PickMe is the app most locals use, and Uber also runs in Sri Lanka. Both let you see a fare before you accept, which removes the negotiation that tuk-tuk drivers expect from visitors. Coverage is strongest in Colombo and around the western and southern coasts; outside those areas you may wait a long time or find no car at all, so keep a guesthouse-arranged driver as a fallback.
Maps: Google Maps handles cities, main roads and most hotels well. Rural and hill-country roads are less reliable, and a wrong turn on a tea-estate road costs an hour. Download the offline map for the districts you plan to cross, and treat any route that looks like a shortcut as unverified until a local confirms it.
Messaging: WhatsApp and Viber are how guesthouses, drivers and guides communicate. Save your driver's number in WhatsApp before the trip and confirm pickup the evening before. A local SIM or eSIM gives you a +94 number, which makes calls and messages cheaper and lets drivers reach you.
Translation: English is widely used in tourism, so a translation app is a backup rather than a necessity. Sinhala and Tamil scripts do not render in every app; a photo-based translation tool helps with menus and signs. Download the offline language pack if you plan to travel outside tourist areas.
Money and banking: your bank or card app matters more than any local payment app. Turn on a travel notification, check foreign transaction fees, and keep a second card stored separately. Local QR payment apps generally require a Sri Lankan bank account, so visitors cannot use them.
Trains and buses: there is no single official app that covers all Sri Lankan rail and bus services. Timetables and seat booking are handled through websites, station counters and third-party resellers, so keep a browser bookmark rather than relying on an app.

Tips
Install and log in to everything at home. Airport Wi-Fi and hotel Wi-Fi can be slow or need a code, and you do not want to be resetting a password while a driver waits.
Download offline maps for every district on your route, not just the first city. Hill-country roads around Ella and Nuwara Eliya are where a live signal disappears.
Save your guesthouse, driver and emergency contacts in WhatsApp before departure. Screenshot the address in Sinhala or Tamil script so you can show it to a driver who does not read English.
Keep a small cash float for tuk-tuks and small shops. Apps and cards cover the cities, but rural stalls and some drivers still work in cash only.
Check your phone's roaming settings before you buy a local SIM. A dual-SIM phone lets you keep your home number active for bank codes while using Sri Lankan data.
If you travel during a busy period, book trains and intercity transport early through the official site or a station counter rather than trusting an app listing.
