Spain in October: what to expect

October splits Spain in two. The centre and south are still warm and mostly dry: Madrid and the plateau run mild by day and cool at night, while Seville and Córdoba stay warm enough for outdoor dinners. The Mediterranean coast and the Balearics hold sea temperatures that still work for swimming in the first half of the month.

The north is a different trip. The Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia are wet in October, with rain on many days and a rain jacket needed whatever the forecast says. The Canary Islands stay mild and are entering their best stretch.

The one thing to watch on the Mediterranean is the DANA: a cut-off low that can dump a lot of rain in a few hours, most often in October and November. It is not constant rain — usually one or two short, intense episodes — but it can close roads and flood low-lying areas for a day.

October sits in the middle band. The first week still carries some late-summer demand, then crowds drop sharply until the 12 October long weekend, when Spanish cities fill with domestic travellers. After that it is quiet again until Christmas.

Prices follow the same curve: hotel rates in Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Palma are well below August levels, and high-speed train seats are easier to find at short notice. Coastal resorts on the Mediterranean and the Balearics begin closing hotels, beach bars and some restaurants from mid-October, so check that your specific resort is still open before booking a beach-focused trip.

For a city-and-Andalusia trip this is close to ideal: you get warm weather and long opening hours without peak-season queues at the Alhambra or the Prado.

The fixed point is 12 October, the Fiesta Nacional de España, a public holiday across the country with parades and military events, most visibly in Madrid. It creates a three-day puente in many regions, so book transport and hotels for that weekend early.

Beyond the national day, October is harvest and food season: grape harvest finishes in La Rioja, and food fairs and mushroom menus appear in Catalonia and the north. Local fiestas vary by town and year, so confirm dates with the local tourist office rather than planning around a specific one.

Cities first. Madrid and Barcelona are at their most comfortable, with terrace weather and no summer crush. Andalusia is the standout: Seville, Córdoba and Granada are warm but no longer punishing, and this is one of the best months to walk the Alhambra and the Mezquita without heat exhaustion.

For the coast, aim at the first half of the month. Valencia, Alicante and the Balearics still allow swimming, and the sea stays warm into November. If you want guaranteed sun, the Canary Islands are the safest bet in the country.

Skip the green north unless you are going for food and cities rather than weather — Bilbao and San Sebastián are excellent in October, but expect rain. Galicia and Asturias are for travellers who do not mind wet days.

Pack for two seasons in one trip. Days are warm enough for short sleeves in the south and on the coast, but mornings and evenings turn cool, especially on the plateau, where Madrid nights drop to single figures. Layers work better than a heavy coat.

Add a compact rain jacket or umbrella for the north and for a possible DANA on the Mediterranean, comfortable walking shoes for cobbled old towns, and sunglasses and sunscreen — October sun is weaker but still strong at midday in Andalusia. If you plan to swim, bring a swimsuit for the first half of the month.

September is warmer and busier, with the sea at its best and crowds thinning after the first week. November is quieter and cheaper, with more rain in the north and some coastal resorts closed for winter. If your dates are flexible, October is the better balance of weather, crowds and price for a city-and-Andalusia trip.
