Choosing your dates step by step

Start with the region, not the month. Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca and Cuenca are dry and continental: frost on winter nights, 35–40 °C in July and August, and the best conditions in April, May, September and October. Andalusia is warmest: Seville and Córdoba are among Europe's hottest summer cities, so aim for March to May or October, with mild, sunny winters on the coast and colder nights in Granada.

Then check the coast and the islands. Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Mallorca and Ibiza have a beach season from June to October, humid August days, and the best months in May, June, September and October. Autumn DANA storms can bring flash floods to the Mediterranean, so keep an eye on forecasts in October and November.

If your dates are fixed to July or August, change the region rather than the month. The green north — San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, Asturias, Galicia — is the reliable escape from the heat, at the cost of rain in almost any month. The Canary Islands stay mild at 20–28 °C all year and are at their busiest in winter, when mainland Spain is cold.

Finally, check the calendar for events that move prices. Holy Week and Seville's April Fair make April the most expensive Andalusian month; Fallas fills Valencia in mid-March; San Fermín fills Pamplona in early July; the 6–8 December long weekend fills hotels nationwide. Booking trains and rooms early matters most in those weeks.

  • Fix the region first, then the month.
  • April–June and mid-September–October work almost everywhere.
  • July–August: north or coast only.
  • Winter: Canaries or southern cities.
  • Check Holy Week, Fallas, San Fermín and the December puente before booking.

Notes and caveats

Prices in this page are 2026 estimates and are given as relative levels, not fixed figures. Weather patterns shift: a late cold snap can reach the plateau in March, and a wet autumn can start in September in the north. The verdicts above describe typical conditions, not guarantees.

Some coastal resorts close for the winter, so a low-season trip to a beach town can mean limited restaurants and hotels. In August, many Madrid shops and restaurants close for the holidays, which changes the city more than the weather does.

  • 2026 estimates only; confirm fares and rates when booking.
  • Coastal resorts may close November to February.
  • Madrid partly closes in August.
  • Check storm and dust warnings in the week before travel.

Questions people ask

What is the best time of year to visit Spain?

May and the window from mid-September to mid-October give warm weather, medium crowds and medium prices across most of the country. April suits Andalusia if you accept the year's highest prices, and winter suits the Canaries or southern cities.

When is the cheapest time to visit Spain?

January, February and November are the low season on the mainland, with the lowest prices and fewest crowds. The Canary Islands are the exception: winter is their peak season, so they are cheaper in late spring and autumn.

What is the weather like in Spain each month?

January and February are cold inland and mild in the south; March to May warm up everywhere; June starts the beach season; July and August are hot inland, often above 40 °C; September and October stay warm; November and December turn cool and wet in the north.

Is July a good time to visit Spain?

Only for the green north or the coast. Inland Andalusia and Madrid often top 40 °C in July, and coasts and islands are at their fullest and most expensive. If your dates are fixed, pick the Basque Country, Asturias, Galicia or a beach base.

When should I visit Andalusia?

March to May and October. Seville and Córdoba reach 40–45 °C in July and August. April has the best weather but the highest prices because of Holy Week and Seville's April Fair; winter is mild on the coast and colder in Granada.

When is the best time to visit the Canary Islands?

Any month: temperatures stay around 20–28 °C all year. Winter is the high season, so for lower prices and quieter resorts choose late spring or autumn. Calima dust storms blow in from the Sahara a few times a year.
