How to get to Spain: airports, flights and border crossings

Fly into Madrid (MAD) for a first trip that continues by high-speed train to Andalusia, or Barcelona (BCN) if Catalonia is the base; both have the most nonstop long-haul routes. Choose Málaga, Alicante, Palma or the Canary Islands only when that region is the whole trip. Land and sea entry from France or Portugal is straightforward.

Which airport fits your trip

Spain has two true long-haul hubs. Madrid-Barajas (MAD) takes the widest range of nonstop flights from the Americas and connects to the whole country by high-speed rail from Atocha. Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) is the better landing point for Catalonia, the Costa Brava and the Mediterranean coast, and it also has direct long-haul service.

The regional airports are the right answer when the region is the trip. Málaga (AGP) for the Costa del Sol and Andalusia, Alicante (ALC) for the Costa Blanca, Palma de Mallorca (PMI) for the Balearics, and Tenerife or Gran Canaria for the Canaries. Many of these are seasonal for US and Canadian carriers, so check the route before you build an itinerary around it.

One rule saves money and a wasted day: do not land in Madrid and plan to start in Barcelona, or the reverse. The high-speed train between them takes about 2h 30m and is easy, but an open-jaw ticket (into one city, out of the other) usually costs little more than a return and removes the backtrack.

Flight times and routes

From the US East Coast, nonstop flights to Madrid run about 7–8 hours; from the West Coast, expect 12–13 hours with a connection or a long nonstop. New York, Miami, Boston, Chicago and Washington have the most nonstop options. From Canada, Toronto and Montreal have direct service; Vancouver usually connects.

From the UK, Madrid is about 2h 30m and Barcelona about 2h. From Ireland, add roughly 20–30 minutes. From Australia and New Zealand there are no nonstops: expect 18–26 hours total with one or two stops, usually through the Gulf, Doha, Istanbul or a European hub.

Fares swing hard by season. July and August, Easter week and the Christmas period are the expensive windows; late January to March and November are the cheapest. Book long-haul 2–4 months out for summer, and check whether a low fare lands at a secondary airport with a costly transfer.

Arriving by land or sea

Spain shares land borders with France (through the Basque Country and Catalonia) and Portugal, plus Andorra in the Pyrenees. All are inside the Schengen area, so there are normally no routine passport checks at the crossing, but you must still carry your passport or national ID and be ready to show it. Long-distance buses and trains cross these borders daily; the high-speed line from France reaches Barcelona and continues to Madrid.

By sea, ferries link Spain with Morocco (Algeciras, Tarifa and Málaga to Tangier and Ceuta), Algeria, Italy (Barcelona to Civitavecchia and Genoa), the Balearics and the Canary Islands. UK ferry routes to Spain have changed over the years, so check current operators before planning a drive-down route.

If you arrive by car, note that some motorways are tolled (autopistas) while many are free (autovías), and that you drive on the right. Rental cars booked for pickup at an airport are usually the cheapest way to collect one.

  • Carry your passport at land borders even when no one stops you.
  • Ferry crossings to Morocco can be delayed by weather; leave a buffer day.
  • Book summer ferry and train seats weeks ahead, especially to the islands.

Before you fly

Entry rules, money and connectivity are the three things worth sorting before departure. Most US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can enter as Schengen visitors for 90 days in any 180, but the EU's entry systems are changing, so confirm the current rule and your passport's validity on the official source rather than a forum.

Spain uses the euro, cards are accepted almost everywhere, and tipping is optional. On arrival, an eSIM or a local SIM is cheaper than roaming; both can be set up before you land.

Travel insurance matters more than usual if you are booking non-refundable long-haul fares or arriving in storm season. Check that it covers the activities you plan, from hiking in the Pyrenees to scooter rental on the coast.

Onward from the airport

Madrid-Barajas sits about 12 km northeast of the centre. Metro line 8 plus a Cercanías train, or the express bus, gets you in for a few euros in roughly 30–40 minutes; a metered taxi takes 20–30 minutes off-peak and costs far more. Barcelona-El Prat is about 12 km southwest: the Aerobús runs to Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes, and the R2 train reaches Passeig de Gràcia and Sants.

From either city, high-speed trains make the rest of Spain easy. Madrid to Seville is about 2h 30m, Madrid to Barcelona about 2h 30m, and Barcelona to Valencia about 3h. Book Renfe tickets early for the cheapest fares, and allow 30–45 minutes at the station for security and platform finding.

If your trip is Andalusia or the coast, compare flying into Málaga or Alicante against a Madrid arrival plus a train. The train is often faster door to door once you count the airport transfer and check-in.

Questions people ask

What is the best airport to fly into for Spain?

Madrid-Barajas (MAD) for a first trip that continues by train to Andalusia, or Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) if Catalonia and the coast are the base. Both have the most nonstop long-haul routes. Pick Málaga, Alicante, Palma or the Canaries only when that region is the whole trip.

How long is the flight to Spain from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?

US East Coast to Madrid about 7–8 hours nonstop; West Coast 12–13 hours with a stop. UK about 2–2h 30m. Canada 7–8 hours from Toronto or Montreal. Australia and New Zealand 18–26 hours with one or two stops. Times are estimates; check your route.

Can I enter Spain by land or sea?

Yes. Land borders with France, Portugal and Andorra are open Schengen crossings with no routine checks, but carry your passport. Ferries connect Spain with Morocco, Algeria, Italy, the Balearics and the Canary Islands. Check current operators and timetables before booking.

Do I need a visa to enter Spain?

Most US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can stay 90 days in any 180 without a visa in the Schengen area. Rules and the upcoming EU entry system change over time, so check the official source before you fly.

How do I get from the airport to the city centre?

Madrid: metro line 8 or the Cercanías train, roughly 30–40 minutes, cheap. Barcelona: the Aerobús or train to the centre, about 35 minutes. Taxis are metered and fixed-fare in some cities; check the official rate before you ride.

Is it cheaper to fly into Madrid or Barcelona?

Fares depend on your origin and season more than the airport. Madrid often has more nonstop options from the Americas; Barcelona is stronger for European and some long-haul routes. Compare both plus an open-jaw ticket before deciding.
